The Hall of the Pontifical Audiences â commonly called the Paul VI Audience Hall, yet casually referred to as Nervi Hall, in honor of the mad genius, Pier Luigi Nervi, who had architected it â trembled and roiled as the din of a million chanting voices reverberated throughout the narrow confines of Vatican City. Countless worshipers, empowered with a newfound passion in their faith, had made their way into Vatican City, filling virtually every square inch of St. Peterâs Square, the continuously growing overflow spilling chaotically into the adjacent streets.
Oberst Jan Andrist, the Commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, had assigned the majority of his imposing, elite Swiss Guard assets to hold the perimeter inside Nervi Hall. He knew that there was no way that they would be able to hold the doors to the hall against the crowd outside, should they become determined enough to attempt to force them. But he reckoned that the very sight of the imposing guards, their halberds gleaming along with their custom-fitted plate armor, would emit psychological intimidation beyond their actual physical limitations. Perhaps the bluff would be enough. If not, then theyâd all sell their lives dearly, and it would be like 1527 all over again.
The numbers were against them. Colonel Andrist knew that his guards totaled no more than a company at best. Even reinforced as they were by an almost equal number of the Gendarmerie, it was obvious to all sane and sentient souls that the City was soon going to be overwhelmed. By millions too many.
Therefore, within mere minutes of the Popeâs televised declaration of a new Crusade, Colonel Andrist had activated protocols little known in the public domain. The secret protocols invoked various components of the Italian armed forces, and approved temporarily their presence and authority inside Vatican City. As such, and after but a few hours, military helicopters flitted overhead, special forces sniper teams manned both high and hidden ground, and dozens of Iveco VM 90P Protected tactical vehicles, manned by elite Carabinieri, reinforced the guardâs perimeter.
Now, though, even with the massive throngs of support â even from the elite Carabinieri, and Italyâs own armed forces â Colonel Andrist knew that even their best efforts were not going to be enough. The number of the devout was staggering and increasing by the second. Shared intel indicated that virtually every highway leading into Rome was jammed with cars. Where there was no more forward progress, the people simply had abandoned their vehicles in the road and started walking toward the Vatican.
A small contingent of Swiss Guard attended the Pope himself and his personal retinue on the stage of Nervi hall, widely flanking them. Below the stage, in a specially reinforced suite blooming with military grade surveillance and communications equipment, Oberst Andrist, his second in command Oberstleutnant Carl Repond, and two dozen technical staff from the Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City State â the Vaticanâs internal police force â manned the nerve center. It was
